About KRMC
Kerala's Premier Rice Milling Consortium
Established in 2003, the Kalady Rice Millers Consortium (KRMC) is the largest rice-producing cluster in Kerala, established to promote the development and modernization of rice milling units in and around Kalady. With over 54 units and 41 consortium members, we have been transforming the rice milling industry since its inception.
Our consortium works to establish industry standards, share technological advancements, and preserve Kerala's rich rice heritage while supporting member mills through collaborative initiatives.
History of the Kalady Rice Mill Cluster
The Kalady Rice Mills Cluster dates back to 1940, with small, conventional rice mills operational in the area. The region saw significant growth and modernization starting in the 1990s, leading to the development of fully mechanized parboiling and milling systems. Today, Kalady hosts the largest rice milling cluster in Kerala, with an annual processing capacity of 6 lakh MT of rice and a daily production of 2000 MT of parboiled rice.
The cluster also produces 100 MT of rice bran, 300 tons of rice husk, and generates 80-100 MT of paddy chaff. Initially, there was no market for rice bran in Kerala, and millers were forced to sell it at very low prices to out-of-state buyers. However, with the establishment of the KRMC's Common Facility Center (CFC), millers now get a fair price for their products, boosting their profits and ensuring better value addition.
